Viele Athleten drängen auf eine Verschiebung der Olympia 2020. Das IOC hat nun auf diese Stimmen reagiert und sich eine Frist gesetzt.

Das Internationale Olympische Komitee hat erstmals eine Frist in der Diskussion um die Verlegung der Sommerspiele in Tokio genannt.

Innerhalb der nächsten vier Wochen soll eine Entscheidung fallen, teilte das IOC in einem offenen Brief an die Athleten nach einer Sitzung des Exekutivkomitees am Sonntag mit.

IOC schließt Absage der olympischen Spiele aus

Eine Absage schloss das IOC aus. Diese würde "keines der Probleme lösen oder irgendjemandem helfen", erklärte das IOC und verwies auf "deutliche Verbesserungen in Japan". Zugleich müsse man allerdings den "dramatischen Anstieg der Fälle und neuen Ausbrüche von COVID-19" auf verschiedenen Kontinenten berücksichtigen.

Zuvor hatten sich Athleten und Verbände auf der ganzen Welt für einen neuen Termin für die vom 24. Juli bis 9. August geplanten und von der Corona-Pandemie bedrohten Spiele ausgesprochen.
